Awarded for actions during the Global War on Terror

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Brian Leif Babin, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Naval Special Warfare Task Unit - RAMADI Ground Force Commander while assigned to Naval Special Warfare Task Group - ARABIAN Peninsula in direct support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM on 2 August 2006. Lieutenant Babin led a combined Clearance operation in an enemy controlled area of Ramadi. While clearing a residence, an enemy sniper shot and critically wounded a SEAL on the roof. Exposing himself to the enemy sniper, Lieutenant Babin dashed across the roof to reach his wounded comrade and immediately called for casualty evacuation and fire support. As two SEALs provided cover fire, with the help of two others, Lieutenant Babin moved directly in the enemy's line of fire and carried the wounded SEAL to safety. Later, he led the clearance of another insurgent stronghold. During the initial assault, Lieutenant Babin was wounded and another SEAL killed. Despite his wounds, he continued to direct the clearance of the target building, securing it, and ensuring that his mortally wounded man and the rest of his unit were safely extracted. By his courageous actions, unrelenting perseverance, and total dedication to duty, Lieutenant Babin reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
