RONKONKOMA, N.Y. — A Long Island town is presenting its Gen. Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award posthumously to a Navy SEAL killed in Afghanistan.

The father of Lt. Michael P. Murphy is expected to accept the award on behalf of his son.

The 29-year-old Murphy, who grew up in Patchogue, was killed in a June 2005 firefight. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery during the battle. Last year, the Navy christened a warship named in his honor.

The town of Islip for several years has honored the World War II general on his birthday by giving an award in his name.

Town dignitaries, as well as Congressmen Peter King and Timothy Bishop, are expected to attend the ceremony at Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma on Thursday.
